The 2013/2014 eco-car list of Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD) has named the Volkswagen eco up! and its two Group siblings ŠKODA Citigo CNG and SEAT Mii Ecofuel as overall winners and thus as the most environmentally friendly vehicles of the year. VCD selects the most eco-friendly vehicle every year.
VCD has been choosing the most environmentally compatible models from a range of over 300 passenger cars once a year for more than 20 years. The primary purpose of the VCD eco-car list is to give help to environmentally aware consumers in making decisions when buying a car. The evaluation by the VCD takes into account fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, noise emission and the amount and type of pollutants emitted.
The four-seater technical triplets are equipped with a 50 kW / 68 PS bi-fuel engine, capable of switching seamlessly between natural gas and petrol. All three have low fuel consumption of 2.9 litres natural gas per 100 kilometres – this means that fuel costs are just a little over 3 euros (USD 4) per 100 kilometres. The low CO2 emission value of 79 g/km can even be significantly reduced by the use of biomethane generated from renewable sources that is already sold or blended with natural gas at hundreds of fueling stations – with a climate-relevant impact.
Just how fuel-efficient it can be to be on the road with one of these three natural gas vehicles was recently proven by extreme driver Gerhard Plattner on a 2,600-kilometre tour through practically all of Europe with a ŠKODA Citigo CNG. For the distance from Vincenza in Italy to Stockholm in Sweden under real traffic conditions, he needed a mere 2.39 kg/100 km and thus had fuel costs of no more than 81.24 euros (less than USD 108) for the entire distance. He was even able to undercut this extremely low figure again on the second to last stage over a distance of 515 kilometres where he achieved a fuel consumption of 2.04 kg/100km.
Volkswagen intends to present more milestone vehicles with natural gas drive systems in the near future: the top-selling car in Europe, the Golf, as Golf TGI BlueMotion, as well as the Audi A3 g-tron will be launched, both extremely fuel-efficient and clean natural gas vehicles. On the current eco-car list of the VCD, the Golf TGI BlueMotion came in second in the “compacts” category. The official market presentation of the natural gas Golf will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in September. The Golf TGI BlueMotion can be ordered starting at that time. CNG models of the Golf Estate and the ŠKODA Octavia are likewise in the works.
The Touran TSI EcoFuel, which is likewise operated with natural gas and has CO2 emissions of just 128 g/km, came in third in the category of seven-seaters.
