  The world’s largest global natural gas event taking place in the USA this week is putting the spotlight on transportation as an important new market for LNG as more than 6,000 delegates attend the LNG 17 Conference and Exhibition. The event, held this year in Houston TX, runs from April 16 to 19.

  From the first-ever conference session on LNG as a transportation fuel — to a dedicated natural gas for transportation seminar program over three days on the exhibition floor — to the display of a Westport Innovations LNG highway tractor — to multiple marine classification societies promoting LNG as a cleaner, more advanced fuel for the marine sector, LNG for transportation is one of the hot topics at LNG 17.

  On heavy highway tractors, GDF Suez announced it will open its first L-CNG station for heavy trucks in Paris later this year with this station being in addition to the three planned stations for Europe’s Blue Corridor project. Liquefaction technology provider Black & Veach was promoting its small scale, skid-mounted Prico E liquefaction technology specially designed to support the development of the transportation market. Meanwhile, the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) shared its plans for a proposed new organization focused on LNG use in the global marine sector. Major oil and gas producer Total presented research results showing that LNG offers significant potential as a transportation fuel with no “show-stopping” issues that could impede its progress.

Shell’s Upstream International Director, Andy Brown, participated in the event opening session and noted the importance of natural gas as a “destination fuel” with transportation use of LNG “becoming material” in the not too distant future. As the world’s largest LNG producer, Shell has committed to developing the market for LNG as a transportation fuel. Shell’s recently announced Louisiana LNG production facility will be the first in the world that is designed to be able to ship LNG via truck, rail or barge.
