CNG-Converted Kombi Leads to Fleet Conversion in Minas Gerais

After proving the economic and environmental benefits of natural gas vehicles (NGV) in a pilot project using a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered school Kombi van, the Andradas Prefecture, in southern Minas Gerais, Brazil, has decided to convert all 18 vehicles in the municipal fleet. It is expected that the CNG conversion will reduce fuel costs over a year by as much as USD 43,000 compared with the cost of gasoline.
“These resources could be allocated to more important expenses such as school meals and other social benefits. And we’ll still be contributing to the air quality of our city, “says Mayor Rodrigo Lopes. The administration has already completed the tender for fleet conversion, work that will be carried out in the workshop of Techno Gas .
The pilot project was supported by Companhia de Gás de Minas Gerais (Gasmig) and equipment manufacturers, providing the Prefecture with a free conversion of ther Kombi plus free gas for the first 90 days of operation.
Andradas, one of the cities connected to the South Minas Gas Pipeline, was the first municipality in the region to have a CNG station. Currently, fuel is also available in the city of Poços de Caldas. The city hall fleet will be the second corporate fleet moved to CNG in the state; in 2013 Gasmig earned the “BH Sustainable Seal” certification from the Municipality of Belo Horizonte for the contribution of its 37 vehicles to the improved air quality in the capital.
